Empowering Women in the Tech Industry

Facing Challenges and Creating a More Inclusive Future

Leading Women in the Tech Industry

Meet Upama Michel, who is in a leading position at our company. In her interview, she shares her journey navigating opportunities and challenges as a woman in the technology sector. Her insights not only reflect our values but also inspire us all to continue fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can succeed.

What are your key experiences as a woman working in technology in the automotive industry?

Being the Only Woman in the Room

It’s a familiar experience for me. Whether at conferences or within my own team in Germany—where the male-to-female ratio is 10 to 1—being the only woman is not uncommon. Despite our conscious efforts to promote inclusivity in hiring, female representation in tech within the automotive industry remains disappointingly low. However, I’m proud to say that my team in India has achieved a 50% representation of women, which is a significant step forward and demonstrates the potential for change when the right structures are in place.

Opportunities for Growth and Leadership

As women, I believe we bring unique strengths to leadership roles. Empathy-driven leadership, team building, and the ability to manage diverse groups are natural qualities we often possess. Additionally, creativity, emotional intelligence, and a collaborative spirit are invaluable in technology and innovation. These qualities not only enhance our leadership styles but also contribute to building more inclusive and effective teams in a field that can sometimes overlook the human element.

How did your cultural background influence your career choices and path in technology?

My background in Finance and Investment didn’t initially point me toward a career in tech, but I pursued it with determination and drive. I learned from my bosses and mentors, consistently taking steps forward and seizing every opportunity. This tenacity and a strong “can-do” attitude—values deeply rooted in my cultural upbringing—guided me to make bold career choices. Following my passion led me to technology, a field that’s constantly evolving and full of excitement. While I’m thrilled to be where I am, I believe that this mindset could have propelled me in any field, as long as I was doing something I loved. Also, a little Nepalese mountain goat in me thrives in challenging terrains!

What do you think companies can do to support and promote diversity in the automotive industry?

Many companies are already taking positive steps, such as fostering an inclusive culture and offering flexible work policies. However, there are additional areas that could be further emphasized to enhance career progression for underrepresented groups.

Promoting Role Models and Visibility

Highlighting the achievements of women and other underrepresented employees can inspire others while reinforcing the company’s commitment to diversity. This kind of representation allows individuals to envision their own success and opens up new career possibilities.

On-Site Childcare – A Parent's Perspective

In Germany, offering on-site childcare could be a game changer, encouraging new parents, especially mothers, to return to the workforce. The current lack of childcare options, combined with traditional gender norms, often discourages young mothers from maintaining career continuity. Addressing this gap would provide much-needed support.

What advice would you like to share with young women who aspire to work in the sector?

Start by asking yourself: What do you truly want to achieve in your career? Once you have clarity, pursue your goals with determination and confidence. Here’s some practical advice to guide you:

Set Short-Term, Achievable Goals

Break down your long-term aspirations into smaller, manageable milestones. This will help you stay focused and motivated while making steady progress.

Embrace Flexibility and Adaptability

The tech sector is fast-paced and constantly evolving. Be open to change and ready to adapt your plans as new opportunities arise.

Seek Out Mentorship and Be Willing to Take Risks

Find mentors who can provide guidance and support. Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks and step outside your comfort zone, as these experiences can lead to significant growth and new opportunities.

“Remember, pursuing your passion with clarity and resilience can open doors and create opportunities that align with your career goals.”

How do you balance your work life and personal life, especially in a demanding field like tech?

Balancing a demanding career in tech with motherhood—especially with two young girls aged 1 and 4—has been both challenging and immensely rewarding. Here are two key strategies that have helped me thrive in both areas:

Flexible Working Hours

I make the most of flexible work arrangements by starting my day early. I take an extended break in the afternoon for essential family activities, such as picking up the kids from kindergarten, preparing meals, and their bedtime routines. This schedule allows me to be fully present both at work and with my family, although it does sometimes mean sacrificing “enough” sleep. Of course, only with a great reliable team can one manage to hold such accommodating schedules, therefore I’m very grateful to have one.

Simplifying and Streamlining

To manage my workload effectively, I’ve embraced a simplified approach with only few things on my plate. I prioritize my commitments to focus only on family and work, outsourcing every other daily chore to gain more flexibility. By streamlining my responsibilities, I can make the most of my limited time and maintain a healthy balance between my personal and professional life.

These strategies have been crucial in helping me navigate the demands of both roles, allowing me to excel at work while being present for my family.
