Second Life for IT Equipment

A Sustainable Approach for used Hardware

IT Second Life as a Contribution to Circular Economy

Used laptops, smartphones or tablets are dumped fast, producing a lot of waste and impacting the environment negatively. Circular economy approaches aim to avoid waste to close product cycles and to enforce recycling and reuse of material and products which are already in the usage cycles. That is why Continental Engineering Services designed a process to give IT equipment a second life with the IT 2nd Life project. With this project, continued use of IT hardware is possible in a sustainable way, which preserves valuable resources and leads to reduced electronic waste.

IT Second Life as a Joint Work Project

Employees have the chance to acquire used and refurbished IT equipment which is no longer used at the company for a good price. The project was created by the Green Tech department of the company. Several locations and project teams from CES worked together to make it possible. Together with erasoo GmbH which organizes the sale and distribution of the used IT hardware, this joint work project was made possible.

General IT Second Life Procedure

Employees from Europe have the chance to contact their local IT department to replace their IT equipment. These departments collect the hardware and send it to the Product Solutions team in Karben in an efficient way to ensure low emissions. The team at the location then refurbishes the hardware which is the most relevant step in the project to ensure cyber security compliance. Afterwards, erasoo GmbH then cleans the hardware, determine the value of the devices, pack them and sell them in their webshop.

"By giving the electronic devices we use a second life, we reduce electronic waste and conserve valuable resources. I am very proud that we have succeeded in developing such a process in close cooperation with several departments, with which we can contribute to a sustainable future."
